5 Additional Tips for Coping with Pain

Let's dig deeper into this issue of coping with pain. Let's really find out how you can manage your pain more successfully, whether you have Fibromyalgia or another pain syndrome.

(Plus, be sure to read this entire week's worth of entries and tune in to the Health Matters Show on Friday, November 28th, at 3 pm EST.)

Now, do you have long term pain symptoms that need to be controlled or gotten rid of entirely?

What about??...

  • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. These may help, but their effect may not last very long unless you choose the "arthritis strength" ones that provide relief for 6 to 8 hours. Read the labels and try those for a change of pace. They can be great for helping you sleep through the night.

  • Taking a prescription drug. This may help more than an OTC (over the counter) remedy, but not necessarily so. Prescription drugs often do very little for intractable, continuous pain. Some of the newer drugs work to relieve pain even though they originally were designed for depression, etc. Check out Dr. Eng's interview from August 2008.
*BONUS NOTE #1: Some prescription pain relievers can be delivered to the body via a pain pump (inserted under the skin) and/or by a pain patch. These methods can provide you with a more continuous source of your medicine, negating the possibility of pain crises because you "run out" of the medicine in your system, and by making sure that you get the proper dose of your drug on a regular basis. This eliminates this kind of dosing problem, however this method is usually only used with strong, narcotic or muscle relaxant medicines.

  • Taking a relaxing soak in warm water.
BONUS NOTE #2: Be sure the water is not too hot. Many doctors advise people with autoimmune problems not to spend much (if any) time in really hot water because the heat stirs up the immune system and often causes a symptom flair. If you get in hot water, you might feel really bad!
  • Getting a therapy treatment like acupunture, physical therapy or chiropractic . Be sure to click on this link for physical therapy and information about relief for pain. The link brings up an interview with a previous guest about such health treatments.

BONUS NOTE #3: Sometimes these types of therapies can be extremely beneficial, both in the short run and to help bring about long term improvement. Several weeks ago a lady asked me about whether I liked chiropractic care or not. My answer is generally, "Yes." I received a lot of benefit from getting specialized care from a chiropractor for many years. I prefer ones with a lighter touch and not the "pop-n-crack" techniques of old.
  • Getting a massage. Sometimes massages help over time because they can provide long term, therapeutic benefits for the body. Getting regular massage from a good therapist who knows what he or she is doing, can be a miracle at helping you function as well as possible. One negative only-- massage may not offer the same soution if you're experiencing a short-term, pain crisis.
BONUS NOTE #4: The human body generally likes to be touched when it's in pain. It you have a good muscle rub or Young Living essential oil blend at home, a light touch stroking the aching body part slowly and lovingly might help you to feel better.
  • Check in Friday, November 28, 2008, where I'll provide this entire list that you can print out and use, plus a video interview during which Elizabeth Fletcher Brown, the owner of Massage Success Radio will give us great info. I encourage you to watch her discuss the benefits of getting regular massage therapy and what it can mean to your health.
