Drug Side Effects

Recently, Joe and Teresa Graedon of the People's Pharmacy wrote, Beware of unexpected drug side effects. They talked about antihistamines to anti-depressants, such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft.

They also mentioned that to help the FDA, Food and Drug Administration, discover unanticipated reactions to prescription medications (such as side effects), you should report them to MedWatch at www.fda.gov/medwatch/.

I recently wrote about the dangers of drug side effects on the Health Matters Show blog. Now, this subject is coming up again.

The drug side effect problem concerns me because I know many people who fall ill to their medicines. (I even have a girlfriend who passed out flat on the floor hitting the back of her head. She believed it was caused from taking Lyrica!)

I know this topic interests you, too. I invite you to post your concerns and share your experiences about RX drugs.

Have you ever suffered with a tough drug side effect?
If so, what did you do?

Thanks,
Cinda Crawford, host of the Health Matters Show

Susan:

I can relate to what you're talking about. Most of the time taking new prescriptions drugs makes me feel worse. It seems I'm limited in what actually helps. I'm really interested to know if you or anyone has suggestions.
Thanks.

Susan, I will try to answer your question as best I can. I encourage other people to share what they know.

I've made it no secret that I think I personally am better off taking as few drugs as possible. Each person must do what's right for him or her. Sometimes these illnesses are so terrible that life seems barely tolerable. In those lonely days, we all need help.

I had problems with the drugs Ambien and Trazadone. There were probably others. Unless you become aware that you're having a definite, acute symptom that must be caused by a drug you've taken, you might never make the connection. I don't think that it helps manage these illnesses that there are so many facets to it. If you start feeling worse, is it the illness or a drug side effect? Chills? Swelling? Feeling weaker? Gaining weak? Dizzy? Too hyped up you can't sleep?

I think this can be tough issue to resolve. I guess that's another reason to keep your drug regimen to as few in number as you can. That will make it easier to figure out if you're having a problem.

As far as drugs making a person feel worse, that is not uncommon. Some people have trouble taking one or two RXs; other people take handfuls of pills each day without any real issues. You may have a bit more of a sensitive system and find relief from herbs, essential oils and/or other alternative medicine healing techniques.

Feel better, my friend, and hang in there. Let me know if you have more thoughts. I love your input.

My name is Michael Smith and i would like to show you my personal experience with Paxil.

I am 40 years old. Have been on Paxil for 5 years now. Please be careful if coming off, i started to wean myself with out doctors help couldnt afford it. I went from 20 mgs to 10 mgs for a month, then 10 mgs to 5 mgs for a month. Because the 20 mgs were way to strong took 20 for 5 years and was always on edge. After about 1 month on 10 felt a little better. I stopped for 7 days completly and man did I feel like shit man I didnt want to leave the house , shop! I just started back on 5 mgs to get it back in my system. Who know what is the right amount you have to be the test subject on yourself!

I have experienced some of these side effects-
Headaches, tremors, emotional wreck, just the blah's when I 1st started takin wasnt bad, cause I also way taken klonopin.

I hope this information will be useful to others,
Michael Smith

Dear Michael, Yes, Paxil is a strong drug. I never took it, but for a time I took another SSRI. I never liked any of them and after I read more about th entire class of drugs, I liked them even less. I commend you for trying to lower your dose. I can't tell if your doctor approved of you coming off or not. Sometimes it's hard to get the right answers and the right care. Hang in there and write back and let me know how you're doing. If you truly intend to come completely off of it, I know you'll figure out the best way for you. (PS- Have you tried to detox your body any now that you have less of the drug in you? I can't tell you for sure, but detoxing might help to clean you out and lessen the unpleasant side effects. It's worth a try if you can do it safely.)
