This week Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum's website has a good article on Thyroid issues. It discusses the ins and outs of how we Fibromyalgia (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) patients are sometimes told our thyroid glands are within normal range, yet we exhibit classic symptoms of low thyroid.
You can find the article at http://www.endfatigue-dev.com/health_articles_d-e/Diet-thyroid_hormone_deficiency.html.
But here's the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say....
Physicians consider thyroid glands to be "unrepairable" if they start to malfunction.
My own doctor once told me, "Once you're on thyroid hormone, you have to stay on thyroid hormone the rest of your life. You can't get off of it." Yet I proved him wrong by getting well. The poor man nearly ate his hat!
Now, don't get me wrong. If you want thyroid hormones and need them, there are very worthy presciptions and Armour Thyroid compounds to consider. Dr. Teitelbaum provides great info on that topic specifically.
Plus, one really decent book worth your time and energy to read on this subject is Mary J. Shomon's, Living Well With Hypothyroidism. I've listed it in the Cinda Recommend's section of this website and it's sold at Amazon so you can order a copy quickly.
But... if you don't want to go the drug route, check around. You may find other answers like I did.
Thanks,
Cinda Crawford, host of the Health Matters Show
